Mustang Trekking
Mustang, lying in the rain shadow of the Himals, is perhaps the last enclave of original Tibetan culture. This is the famed “Land of Lo”. Forbidden and isolated to the world for centuries, during which its own culture and traditions evolved. You are now permitted to experience such as unique Kingdom within the Kingdom of Nepal. A most unforgettable experience.
The area is the part of the Tibetan plateau, and is high, dry and beautiful. It lies to the north–west of the kali Gandaki, beyond Kagbeni, which is far west as you can go on the Jomsom Trek The capital of mustang is Jomsom; the region of Tibetan influence north to Kagbeni is generally referred to as upper Mustang. Upper Mustang consist of two distinct regions, with five villages inhabited by people related to the Manangis; and the north region (The ancient kingdom of lo)where the language, culture and Traditions are almost purely Tibetan.
The Trekking season for Mustang starts from late march until early November. The Trek does not go to extremely high elevations. Someday trekking is too short and others day long. The trek begins from Jomsom. From Jomsom the trek takes about six days to reach the incredible walled town of Lo Manthang, which sits to an altitude of about 3700 meters. The route passes through Kagbeni and Chele, and then on the west side of the valley to EkloBhatti and Tsarang, passing old forts and a fascinating landscape of wind eroded cliffs. Times should be allowed for exploring Lo Manthang and the country further along the Mustang Khola and then an alternative return can be made to Jomsom by way of Tange, Tetang and Muktinath.
