Koshi
Tappu Jungle
The
Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve is a small 175 sq. km reserve that lies on
the beautiful flood plain of the Sapta Koshi in the eastern Nepal. Koshi
Tappu Wildlife Reserve was established in 1976 and the reserve is named
after the biggest river of Nepal, the Koshi. It is a major residing, juncture
and wintering site for waterfowls and waders in the sub-continent.
The reserve is a
home to the last surviving population of wild water buffalo (Arna), various
deer, blue cow (Nilgai), gharials crocodiles and Gangetic dolphins. The
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is accessible by air, surface and river.
The best time too visit this fabulous wildlife reserve is between October
to March when much of the migratory and local birds can be sighted by
the barrage and many of the river channels. Numerous Himalayan peaks including
the Makalu I (8,463 m), the fifth highest mountain in the world can be
seen during the clear time of the year.
